Técnicas Reunidas, a Spanish company, will supply two hydrogen production reformers for a new ammonia and urea fertilizer complex being developed by Dangote, one of Africa’s largest multinationals, headquartered in Nigeria, in the town of Gode.
The multinational Dangote Group has awarded Técnicas Reunidas the contract to supply two hydrogen production reformers for the new ammonia and urea fertiliser complex it is developing in Gode, in the Somali Region of Ethiopia.
Dangote is a major industrial conglomerate founded in 1978, headquartered in Nigeria, and operating in 17 African countries, with a diverse range of activities in sectors such as oil, gas, petrochemicals, fertilisers, cement, automotive and property, among others. Its estimated turnover for 2026 is expected to be around US$36 billion.
The plant it is developing in Gode aims to utilise Ethiopia’s natural gas reserves to manufacture fertilisers, reduce dependence on imports and foreign exchange expenditure, and bolster the country’s agricultural supply. It will have an annual production capacity of three million tonnes of urea fertiliser, enabling it to meet demand from neighbouring markets.
The contract awarded to Técnicas Reunidas includes the design, procurement, manufacture and FOB (free on board) supply of two reformers for producing the hydrogen required to generate ammonia and urea at the plant.
This equipment will have a production capacity of over 200,000 Nm³/h (cubic metres of hydrogen per hour). It will be supplied within a maximum of 18 months by TR-Technical, the division of Técnicas Reunidas specialising in the design and supply of heat transfer equipment.
The technology licensor for the reformers will be Topsoe, a Danish company specialising in chemical process technologies and catalyst manufacturing, particularly for the production of ammonia, hydrogen, fuels and other chemicals.
With this new contract, which follows the award of the engineering services for a large green hydrogen plant in South Africa recently announced by the company, Técnicas Reunidas is significantly expanding its presence in Africa.
In short, the contract puts Técnicas Reunidas in an excellent position to capitalise on new opportunities in the energy and fertiliser sectors across the African continent and expand its presence there. It also enables close collaboration with a leading technology licensor and strengthens its position in low-carbon hydrogen production and its derivatives.
