Shell and Komatsu Renew Long-term Technical Collaboration

Shell Lubricants and Komatsu have renewed their global collaboration, extending a relationship that has included technical co-development, lubricant development and work related to equipment longevity in the construction and mining equipment sectors.

Shell supplies oils and lubricants for factory filling across Komatsu’s construction and mining equipment portfolio in markets worldwide.

Under the collaboration, engineers from the two companies work on lubricant formulations, machine longevity and product development. One development from the partnership is CK-4 engine oil, which Shell says can support oil drain intervals of up to 1,000 hours on selected new Komatsu machine models.

Shell also produces Komatsu Genuine Oil (KGO). The companies are continuing discussions around an energy transition roadmap covering fluid development, construction machinery electrification, charging infrastructure and alternative energy solutions.

The collaboration also includes testing of products and technologies for electrified equipment. One recent example is the selection of Shell’s SBRS Flex80 as a recommended charging solution for Komatsu’s PC210LCE-11 in Europe, following testing conducted by SBRS and Komatsu.

Takuya Imayoshi, President and Representative Director CEO of Komatsu, said: “The sustained collaboration between Komatsu and Shell has consistently delivered efficiency, machine reliability, and technical innovation to our global customer base. During our discussions, Jason shared Shell’s view that companies can ‘emerge stronger after a crisis.’ I believe this reflects the value of long-term partnerships. As we face an increasingly complex business environment, we look forward to working closely with Shell to overcome challenges together and continue creating value for customers around the world.”

Jason Wong, Executive Vice President of Global Lubricants at Shell plc, said: “Marking 25 years of global cooperation with Komatsu is a milestone that reflects our commitment to Powering Progress Together. Our relationship extends far beyond a traditional vendor alignment; it is an active technical partnership. Through global supply networks and co-engineering practical charging infrastructure, we are delivering operational resilience as well as reducing total cost of ownership for Komatsu customers.”
