Utility-scale and commercial photovoltaic (PV) installations are increasing in size and complexity, and maintenance technicians are more frequently required to diagnose faults and verify system performance while equipment remains energised. This presents a significant safety challenge, as traditional voltage measurements often require technicians to open combiner boxes, inverter enclosures or other live electrical equipment, increasing their exposure to electrical hazards.
Performing operating voltage measurements at PV module connections
One approach to reducing this risk is to perform operating voltage measurements directly at PV module connections using touch-safe test leads designed for live systems. This allows technicians to collect critical performance data without unnecessarily exposing live conductors, helping to improve both safety and maintenance efficiency.

The Fluke TLPV2 Solar Test Lead Set
The Fluke TLPV2 Solar Test Lead Set has been developed with this objective in mind. Featuring a Y-style configuration with official Stäubli MC4 connectors, the test leads install in-line with PV modules, enabling operating voltage measurements while the system remains in service. By allowing technicians to access measurement points externally, the need to open energised electrical enclosures during routine diagnostics can often be avoided.
The increasing adoption of higher-voltage PV systems has also placed greater emphasis on using test equipment that complies with appropriate electrical safety standards. The TLPV2 is rated to CAT III 1500 V and CAT IV 1000 V, making it suitable for modern commercial and utility-scale solar installations where higher operating voltages are common.

The TLPV2 is compatible with a range of solar measurement instruments, including the Fluke 393 FC Solar Clamp Meter, the Fluke 283 FC/PV Digital Multimeter and other test instruments fitted with standard 4 mm shrouded banana plug inputs.
