As the operator of one of Southern Africa’s most critical natural gas arteries, the Republic of Mozambique Pipeline Company (ROMPCO) plays a pivotal role in delivering energy security and enabling industrial growth. For over two decades, ROMPCO has maintained an impressive track record of uptime and operational reliability, achievements made possible through an unwavering focus on expert pipeline maintenance and strategic foresight.
Today, as Mozambique’s natural gas sector evolves and expands, ROMPCO remains at the forefront of innovation, ensuring that its infrastructure continues to meet growing regional demand for cleaner, reliable energy. “At ROMPCO, our core responsibility is to ensure the continuous, safe and efficient delivery of natural gas from Mozambique’s production fields to our customers,” says CEO Mlandzeni Boyce.
“This is not just about moving molecules, it is about powering industries, supporting livelihoods, and enabling economic development. Our commitment to uptime is directly linked to national and regional energy security,” says Boyce. ROMPCO’s pipeline system, linking the onshore Pande and Temane gas fields in Mozambique to markets in both Mozambique and South Africa, has become a backbone of regional energy infrastructure. As gas becomes a preferred transitional fuel globally, ROMPCO’s role in the region has grown in strategic importance.
“Natural gas is widely recognised as a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels like coal and heavy fuel oil,” continues Boyce. “As countries in the region seek to decarbonise their energy mix while still driving industrialisation, we are ensuring that this cleaner energy source is available and accessible through our infrastructure.”
Looking ahead, ROMPCO is facing a number of significant challenges, not least of which is the expected decline in production from the Pande and Temane gas fields. However, Boyce is confident in the company’s ability to respond. “One of the biggest risks for any gas transmission company is the uncertainty of upstream supply,” he explains.
“We are fully aware that the maturing of the Pande and Temane fields will present limitations in the medium to long term. But we are not standing still. We are proactively engaging with LNG infrastructure developers across the region to explore complementary sources of supply.”
“These discussions are not hypothetical but are part of a real, strategic effort to guarantee continuity of supply for our clients, many of whom depend on us to power entire production processes. Our planning horizon is long-term, and our goal is to ensure the pipeline infrastructure remains a reliable energy corridor, regardless of changes upstream,” says Boyce.
Pipeline reliability is underpinned by technology, and ROMPCO is investing in advanced digital solutions to stay ahead. Among its most recent improvements are real-time monitoring systems that use smart sensors and data analytics to identify anomalies before they become critical.
“We have embraced a digital-first approach to maintenance,” explains Boyce. “With real-time data flowing from our pipeline infrastructure, our teams can respond rapidly to any deviations in pressure, temperature, or flow. This not only helps us prevent outages or leaks, but also allows us to optimise maintenance schedules, extend asset life, and reduce environmental risk.”
In parallel, ROMPCO has initiated a series of environmental, social and governance (ESG) assessments to align its operations with sustainability imperatives. “We are mapping out our ESG baseline and identifying opportunities to strengthen our environmental stewardship,” adds Boyce. “This includes reducing methane emissions, improving energy efficiency, and ensuring our operations benefit the communities we serve.”
Beyond its technical achievements, ROMPCO plays a strategic role in supporting regional integration and economic development. Natural gas transported through its pipeline supports industries, urban centres, and power generation across Mozambique and South Africa.
“Access to affordable and reliable energy is a catalyst for industrialisation,” says Boyce. “Mozambique is uniquely positioned with some of the largest natural gas reserves in sub-Saharan Africa. At ROMPCO, we are working to ensure this resource translates into inclusive growth.”
The company is also evaluating the potential transportation of regasified liquefied natural gas (R-LNG) through its existing pipeline network, offering a flexible solution to reach industrial customers and remote markets. “The market is evolving,” notes Boyce. “We are seeing new types of industrial users emerging, and different geographies demanding access to cleaner fuel. We are studying ways to expand our infrastructure through additional loop lines or connections so we can support that growth effectively.”
Looking to the next decade, ROMPCO anticipates that Mozambique’s energy sector will be increasingly diversified, resilient, and integrated into the wider Southern African region. “We see a future where Mozambique is not just an energy exporter, but also an industrial hub,” states Boyce. “Natural gas will play a vital role in this transformation, especially in gas-to-power projects and local manufacturing. That is why we are actively planning to expand our pipeline capacity from the current 212 petajoules (PJ) per year to 400 PJ per year. This expansion would significantly boost energy security and economic opportunity.”
ROMPCO’s vision is not limited to infrastructure. The company is also building internal capacity, strengthening its technical workforce, and prioritising partnerships that drive long-term value. “We are engaging with investors, technical partners, and policymakers to ensure we are part of a broader ecosystem that supports energy transition and regional development,” says Boyce. “Our mission is not only to transport gas, but to enable economic, environmental, and social change.”
As the energy landscape evolves, ROMPCO continues to build on a foundation of operational excellence and stakeholder trust. “Reliability, safety, and sustainability are not just metrics for us, they are core values,” concludes Boyce. “Our customers and partners depend on us, and we take that responsibility seriously. Through smart maintenance, technological innovation, and strategic foresight, ROMPCO will continue to deliver the energy that drives Southern Africa forward.”
